The application for a patent “Device for producing light decorations on a transparent screen” was filed by G. I. Gidoni on August 13, 1920. However, consideration by the Committee for Inventions lasted about five years. As a result, the device was assigned by the Committee’s specialists to class 77 g 102, which, according to the index of classes of inventions of the USSR, meant: equipment for theaters, circuses, etc.; devices for demonstrating tricks; 102 – backstage, curtains and other decorations, means for their movement. Apparently, the key word for classification was “scenery.” In fact, Gidoni himself initially called his device “light decorations.” It is no coincidence that one of his first light-colour scores (opus 2) was prepared specifically for the light theatre (the light-colour part for the first scene of the first act of Hamlet [The Terrace in Front of the Palace]).
