The author of “Colour-Sound-Number Methods” is violinist, conductor, vocal teacher and theosophist Alexandra Vasilievna Zakharyina-Unkovskaya (1857–1927). She can be called one of the first female light-music artists in Russia. She graduated with a gold medal from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the class of prof. L. Auer. The earliest known publications about the “Colour-Sound-Number” method date back to 1909. Unkovskaya received the Milan Conservatory Prize for her technique. V.V. Kandinsky was actively interested in her works.
